Headlights On
Writing Children's Books #1
All four of my children’s books were officially for sale by the end of October, 2025. I was incredibly amazed that something I had as an idea in my head was now being held in my hands. Since then, a few of you have reached out with questions about how it happened. Let me tell you.
Like all great children’s book authors, it all started with a love to read. Couple that with my own instinctual love of learning, and add in the wonder available from working with kids, and I think it was inevitable that I would write some books.
I remember sitting in my mother’s lap as she read to me. Her long and perfect nail running smoothly under the letters from left to right had me intrigued. I would always giggle when she did the voices. She’s where I get my talent for reading aloud.
I was the first dropped off for nursery school. This in the days when that’s what it was called. Private. Home-based. A lotta loving and a lotta learning. It was great. Anyway, being the first one there, I was allowed to sit in the book area and entertain myself until everyone else came in. I was in heaven. I learned to read early, so any time alone with books was beloved.
Back then, my favorite was Dr. Seuss. I loved the rhythm and the rhymes. That structure helped me a lot with my beginning reading. From there, my vocabulary quickly escalated.
Because my first love was Dr. Seuss, I wanted to write a book like him. I wanted to use basic words for beginning readers and a rhyming strategy. I wanted to include children in an outlandish situation with recognizable characters. I wrote The Brothers’ Bear.
This story follows five brothers stuck inside on a windy night. What follows is an adventure in bravery and kindness. This is the best story to cuddle up with and share some time with your own little bear. The word patterns make it easy for beginning readers to start to read aloud. Even older kids can reflect on that apostrophe in the title. Bear’s or Bears’. Great conversation!
My tribute to Dr. Seuss was so much fun to write. I’m already working through some rhymes for my next one.
Meanwhile, I’m learning to draw so I can add more than my skills with AI to the illustrations.
You can purchase The Brothers’ Bear here, and check out my other books here.
Next time, I’ll be sharing more about my book, I Know A Kid. I’ll let you know how I took a piece of my personal life and built a whole book around it, and why it makes such a great gift for any kid you might know.
